Be a Disruptor

Artists are disruptors no matter where we are placed — even if we are quiet, meek, sweet, rocking the boat is not on our to-do list.

Some of us, of course, thrive on the role. We love to instigate and challenge — the status quo is our archenemy.

But let’s be honest: you can be an accountant and be known as the gal who gets in people’s faces.

Writers and rockstars are notorious for being disruptors and occasionally we will see a rare politician who tries to shake things up.

So what is so different about the visual artist disruptors?

Why are paintbrushes so disruptive?

There is something completely magical about the ability to capture an image onto a 2D canvas that will open a portal to a world beyond. With just a few tools, pigments, highlights and shadows, and knowing measurements and proportions, an artist can replicate 3D life or invent something totally different.

The artist disruptor can imagine something that doesn't exist yet or combine imagery that has never yet been seen together. This is powerful!

Every time an artist touches the canvas, we are shaking the status quo by creating what didn't previously exist.

• We disrupt the moment with every glossy kiss of our brush.
• We disrupt the soul of every viewer by touching their emotions in a new way.
• We disrupt the living room with the presence of color or imagery that illuminates a beauty not previously known.

Artists disrupt culture by pulling the far things near and imagining a future of possibilities.

There is no need for artists to shout their ideas or glue themselves to works of art in the museums. It’s not necessary to lie down in streets with bright orange vests on.

We don't need a microphone, a stage, or even a captive audience. We only need our time in the studio to do our magic. The world waits to see what transpires at the end of the brush. History will show that the world we create through the collective art of our generation is the future.
