Frequently Asked Questions

Can any level of artist take this class?

Yes! This class is designed to be clear enough that the newest beginner can understand it. Seasoned artists can also learn something new with Elli’s technique for painting flowers. Even if you think you already know oil painting we recommend taking this, plus you can get your money back if you don’t like it.

What supplies do I need?

Oil paints

  • Red
  • Yellow
  • Blue
  • Black
  • White

Any shade or variation of the above colors will work just fine. Just use whatever you have lying around!

If this is your first time purchasing oil paint, don’t stress. You really can’t go wrong here–just get some inexpensive primary colors and you’re good to go.

Brushes

  • 2-3 small to medium sized brushes

Any brushes you have on hand will work.

If you’re completely new to painting: Elli’s favorite are filbert brushes and a script brush is great for details. But any inexpensive brushes will work–don’t overthink it!

Solvent

Any solvent or paint thinner will work. Again, just use whatever you have on hand.

We do recommend non-toxic solvents, either citrus or soy based. Some great brands are: EcoHouse, Soythin, and Gamsol.

Canvas

Any small canvas will do. It is a loose recommendation that it be no bigger than about 12” x 16” but use anything you have available. Size really doesn’t matter. Neither does quality–get the cheapest price if you don’t already have a canvas at home.

Palette

Nothing fancy needed. A piece of glass or ceramic plate works great. Many artists use the glass in old picture frames.

Cotton Rag

Again, nothing fancy. Just any old cotton rag you don’t mind throwing away when you’re done. Torn up old t-shirts work too.
