Who said that artists can’t be heroes? Or that they don’t deserve a spot in the record books? If Philadelphia-based artist and art teacher Dyymond Whipper-Young has her way, a giant doodle will make her a modern hero in art. It’ll also allow her to set a new world record for the largest drawing done by a single artist.

Devotion, Drive and Doodles Win the Day!

According to 6ABC News in Philadelphia, Whipper-Young is currently working on a gigantic drawing, some 6,450 square feet to be exact, for a new exhibit called Crayola IDEAworks: The Creativity Exhibition. The artist’s only tool to make this heroic drawing a reality is a Crayola Project XL black marker.

Her drawing is a series of giant doodles that feature imagery taken from land, space and sea. The Franklin Institute, whose purpose is to shine a light on creativity, decision-making and problem-solving, asked Whipper-Young to be a part of the exhibit.

At the time of this writing, the dauntless artist had already spent 24 hours drawing on her giant master doodle and expects to spend about that much more time on the drawing before it’s done.

In the news interview, the artist expressed her lifelong passion for art. The 24-year-old’s willpower and dedication is sure to inspire the art students she teaches every day!

About a Few Past Record Holders

Artist Johanna Basford, author of the best-selling coloring books The Secret Garden and The Lost Ocean, holds the current world record for the largest drawing by an individual. In January of 2020, Basford set the current record by drawing a 5,395-square-foot doodle of her signature flowers and other doodles.

Basford gained notoriety after becoming the first big champion of the adult coloring book movement. Her coloring books, filled with inky doodles of whimsical flowers, plants, delight bugs and more, made both coloring and doodling a viable pastime for adults, who wanted to relieve some stress and express their creativity.

On November 3, 2020, Italian artists FRA! and Xiaomi Italia created a 6118.96-square-foot drawing Doodle Dream, according to the Guinness Records. They donated the drawing to the municipality of Altomonte to help support community work.

When Whipper-Young finishes her drawing, she’ll hold a world record and a place in the history of art.
